The Wilderness of Zin

Hardcover, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1936. First American Edition. Very Good+. The true first edition of this title was published in 1914 by the Palestine Exploration Fund as part of their Annual. The second UK edition was published by Jonathan Cape in 1936 and this is the first American edition also published in 1936. In January and February of 1914 Lawrence and Woolley mapped the Zegev region of the Sinai Peninsula. The British knew war was coming (it would erupt in August) and knew that Turkey which controlled the Sinai would be one of their opponents. The mapping mission was secret and Lawrence and Woolley were to pose as archeologists, both of them actually were archeologists with experience at Carchemish. To further their cover, Kitchener ordered them to write The Wildnerness of Zin which was duly published. The original Palestine Exploration Fund edition was Lawrence's first appearance in book form. Bound in publisher's red cloth covered boards with gilt spine and cover titles. With extensive photographs, maps, and illustrations including a fold-out plan. Previous owner name and date on ffep. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 166 pages. [Item #82563]
