Diary Kept While Travelling in Arabia During 1911 (Along with an Essay on Flecker)
Softcover, Surrey, England: B. Johnston, 1990. Fine. Despite its title, Lawrence's Diary covers July and August of 1911 when he was walking across northern Syria. He had been working at the Carchemish dig under Hogarth when the British Museum ordered a stoppage in the work. He sailed to Tell Ahmar and then left there on foot on July 12 and walked, mostly by himself, until he arrived in Beirut on August 11 and left that city by boat on August 12. Lawrence was badly ill for most of his journey and survived thanks to Arab hospitality. He learned his physical limits in the desert on this walk and strengthened his Arabic. Two volumes. Volume one is the Diary as well as some letters Lawrence wrote during that period. Volume two is an essay Lawrence wrote on his friend the poet Flecker. Both volumes come in a matching single slipcase. This set is a privately issued reprint of the rare 1937 first edition. It was published in 1990 by the collector B. Johnston who had the originals in his library. Beautifully bound in cream wove paper. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall. [Item #82557]
