Roosevelt's narrative of his 1909 African Safari is one of the most famous and desired of all African game books. The Safari's official name was the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition and it was primarily financed by Andrew Carnegie. The Expedition sent back 11,400 animal specimens which took the Smithsonian museum 8 years to catalog. During the expedition Roosevelt met many of the leading hunters, land-owning families, and local leaders of Africa. The expedition was led by big-game hunter and tracker R. J. Cunningham. Frederick Selous, perhaps the greatest of all the big-game hunters, joined it from time to time. Roosevelt travelled with his son, Kermit, and a team of Smithsonian scientists. The Expedition's route took them from New York City to British East Africa (Kenya) , the Belgian Congo, and down the Nile to Khartoum.
