Includes an essay by Len Ainsworth as to the indentity of the author 'Captian Flack' - he remains a mystery. The Texan Rifle-Hunter was originally published in London in 1866 and purports to describe the Texas travels and hunting adventures of a Texas Ranger Captain, although no official Ranger rolls indicate a Captain Flack ever existed. Howes thought Flack could be the English writer Percy B. St. John, but no one is sure. According to Ainsworth, J. Frank Dobie looked into the mystery in London and was shown the original publisher's records - they made their royalty check out to Captain Flack and it was endorsed as such.
