Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) was an American artist and writer who mostly lived in Europe as a working artist. He is most famous for portraying architectural subjects in etchings and lithographs. He was also a WWI artist in London who painted original posters for the war bond effort in the US. Books bound in publisher's brown cloth covered boards with gold spine titles. Both ends of spine very gently bumped - both volumes. Corners of both volumes sharp. Top page edges of both volumes gilded. No previous owner marks. Texts clean. Volume I Dust Jacket spine and back cover age darkened. Both ends of Vol I DJ spine bumped with multiple small tears. Vol I DJ top edges and back bottom edge shelf worn. Vol I DJ corners rubbed with small tears. Volume II DJ spine and front cover age darkened. Vol II DJ spine has half-inch by quarter-inch tear in the center of spine. Head of Vol II DJ spine gently rubbed. Vol II DJ top corners rubbed with small tears. This set was written and edited by his wife after his death, theirs was a marriage of intellectual equals who agreed their marriage would not interefere in their respective work. Both DJs now protected in mylar. Ships same or next business day well protected in a box. Please note this is a 2 volume hardback set.
