Despite the 18th century dates on some of these works, the Library Illustrative of Social Progress was probably printed around 1872 by James Camden Hotten. He claimed the books were reprints of 18th century pornographic texts taken from the library of Henry Thomas Buckle, a famous historian of the time. This was probably a lie. The works were reprints of 18th century pornography, but the originals were actually from the library of Henry Spencer Ashbee, a major book collector who had published a bibliography of erotica under a pseudonym. In any event, the 7 works in this single volume are: Exhibition of Female Flagellants Part 1, Exhibition of Female Flagellants Part II, Lady Bumtickler's Revels, A Treatise on the Use of Flogging in Venereal Affairs, Madame Birchini's Dance, Sublime of Flagellation, Fashionable Lectures...with birch discipline...
