He served as Chief Secretary for Ireland (1907-1916). This 2 volume set contains his critical essays on Carlyle, Falstaff, Milton, Lamb, Emerson, and book-buying. Volume I: pp 232, published 1890. Volume II: pp 291, published 1888. Bound in half leather with marbled paper covered boards. Previous owner name on second free end paper (Vol I & II). Both ends of spines rubbed with small loss of leather. Corners bumped and rubbed with loss of leather. Shelf wear to edges. Page edges soiled. Text is clean. All hinges sound.
