Hardcover, Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1870. First Edition. Good+. Signed and inscribed by the illustrator on the front pastedown. Inscription reads "With the compliments of WCW to Miss Alice Trezerand." Previous owner pasted a newspaper clipping to the front pastedown next to the inscription, the clipping tells us that the Virginian and eminent artist Dr. Warren C. White was in town to work on illustrations that would appear in this book. White was not the only illustrator of this book and a previous owner, perhaps Alice, has helpfully notated the name of the appropriate artist under each illustration. The author, Edward A. Pollard (1832-1872) , is known to history as the man who invented the Lost Cause ideology. The announcement at the beginning of the book indicates that Pollard and White were friends. Book contains 11 illustrations including the frontispiece, with 10 pages of publisher's ads in the rear. Fold-out map is present, with multiple closed tears with tape applied to the back of the map. Spine is age darkened, both ends of spine bumped and rubbed with loss of cloth. All corners bumped. Ocassional age spotting throughout text, previous owner's ocassional pencil marks (and 1 pen mark) throughout text. Front hinge cracked.
