Camoens: His Life and His Lusiads. (Two Volume Set)

Hardcover, London: Bernard Quaritch, 1881. Very Good. First edition, second issue. Bound in publisher's original red cloth. According to Penzer, the 2nd issue is identical to the first except bound in red cloth instead of green. This is a 2 volume set of Burton's biography of Luis de Camoes, known as Camoens in English at the time. Luis de Camoes (1525-1580) was a Portuguese adventurer and poet who is still considered to be the greatest poet in the Portuguese language. He was Burton's favorite poet and Burton tried to visit every place in India and the East where Camoens was known to have been. Camoens' most famous work is Os Lusiades, known in English as Luciads. This 2 volume set includes a biography of Camoens, Burton's extensive notes on Luciads, an appendix of the known editions and translations of Cameons works, a Glossary, and a section entitled The Reviewer Reviewed by Isabel Burton in which she defends her husband against critics of his earlier translation of Luciads. According to Penzer, this 2 volume set was part of a larger 6 volume set. This 2 volume set includes the complete biography and notes on Lusiads. An earlier 2 volumes contained Burton's translation of Lusiads and a later 2 volume set contained a translation of the Lyricks.
