[Item #80806] Captain Jack Modoc Renegade. Doris Palmer Payne.

Captain Jack Modoc Renegade

Hardcover, Portland, Oregon: Binford & Mort, 1958. Very Good+. The story of the Modoc War of 1873 in which the Modoc tribe of California and Oregon left their reservation for their traditional land and resisted the US Army's attempts to return them to the reservation. The Modoc were led by Kintpuash, also known as Captain Jack, the only Native American leader to ever be charged with war crimes and hanged by the Army. Perhaps not so coincedentally, the Modoc managed to kill a Major General in the US Army, the only Major General to die in the Indian Wars. Written as a novel, but author claims the book is historically accurate. Both ends of spine gently bumped. Corners sharp. Minor soiling to page edges. No previous owner marks. Text and illustrations clean. Covers now protected in mylar. Ships same or next business day well protected in a box. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 259 pages. [Item #80806]
