Humboldt wrote in French and the French edition was published in Paris in 1810. This is the first English Edition, Humboldt's French has been translated into English by Helen Maria Williams. This edition includes 20 plates on 19 sheets, 5 of them in beautiful full color. Two volume complete set bound in half leather with marbled paper covered boards. Top page edges gilded. Spine leather rubbed with some loss of leather, all corners and spine edges rubbed with some loss of leather. See our photo for rubbing to spine. Alexander von Humboldt was the most famous scientist of his day. From 1799-1804 he explored Latin America including present day Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.
