Hardcover, Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1903. Very Good. Complete 4 volume matching set. John Fiske (1842-1901) was an American historian and philosopher who helped popularize the works of Charles Darwin in the United States. Fiske's philosophy was greatly influenced by evolution. Darwin wrote of him "I never in my life read so lucid an expositor as you are." Fiske could be contradictory, he believed in the natural superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race, but was an abolotionist who wrote that natural selection was no longer working on humans because human society had advanced too much. Fiske also defended Christianity and saw no conflict between it and science. All 4 volumes have glue residue on the front pastedown where a previous owner removed bookplates.
