Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was a Unitarian minister, militant abolitionist, champion of women's rights, and Union officer in the Civil War. Higginson strongly opposed slavery before the Civil War and was one of the Secret Six that financed John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. During the Civil War he was Colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment. After the War, he was a strong and outspoken supporter of women's rights. Book has no previous owner marks. Text is clean and bright. Top and side page edges soiled. Dust jacket retains its original price. Dust jacket spine a bit faded.
