Eugene Bandel was from Prussia and joined the Sixth Infantry of the US Army. He marched around the western US in the 1850s, writing letters home to his parents in German and keeping a journal in English. His parents kept his letters for him and his daughter eventually translated them. Fold-out map of Bandel's journeys present in rear of book. Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown. Previous owner name lightly in pencil on copyright page. Text and illustrations clean and bright, tissue guards present. Both ends of spine and corners gently rubbed.
