The Rise and Fall of Latin Humanism in Early-Modern Russia Pagan Authors, Ukranians, and the Resiliency of Muscovy

Hardcover, Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1995. First Edition. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket. This book argues that between 1650 and 1789 Russia fliter with Western Europe's Latin Humanism. The book contributes to our understanding of the reforms of Peter the Great and Catherine's "enlightened" reputation. The author shows that all levels of Russian society, especially the nobility, rejected the pagan authors of Latinate culture propogated by the Ukranian clergy. This book examines printing history, Latin teaching, and private libraries in Russia and also looks at the thought of Russia's "enlighteners." Book has no previous owner marks - text is clean. Spine slightly slanted and front board slightly bowed. Minor age spotting to top page edges. Previous bookseller's small label removed from the first free endpaper leaving a bit of sticker residue.
