Signed and Inscribed by author in red ink on the full title page in year of publication. Inscription reads "To Bill Milliors with best wishes, John Howard Griffin 10/3/59." The writing and publication of this book was paid for by the First National Bank of Midland in commemorate the opening of their new bank building. John Howard Griffin was a published author when the bank hired him to write this history of the Midland Country of West Texas. The book presents a chronological history of the area, and also includes detailed accounts of daily life, foods, and customs. Although written in 1959, the book is known for its fair treatment of the Comanche. The author covers the area during the time of the Comanche, the time of the great cattle ranches, and the massive area transformation wrought by the discovery of oil and the development of the Permian Basin. Small previous bookseller label on rear pastedown. Both ends of spine gently bumped, corners gently rubbed. Dust jacket is Good only with a faded spine, missing pieces from the spine, and several tears to the spine (now closed with tape applied to the inside of the jacket).
