A System of Phrenology (2 Volumes Complete)

Hardcover, Edinburgh: MacLachlan, Stewart & Co, 1843. Very Good. Fifth Edition. Two volume set. George Combe (1788-1858) was a Scottish lawyer and one of the main leaders of the phrenology movement for 20 years. He co-founded the Edinburgh Phrenological Society in 1820, an influential group that would grow to 120 members (one third of them physicians) , and inspired the opening of 40 more such societies in Britain. Although we now know that phrenology has no scientific basis and is now classified as a pseudoscience, its practitioners did contribute to real science by dismissing supernatural causes for mental illness and promoting the belief that the brain is the organ of the mind. In some ways phrenology is the forerunner of neuropsychology. This set has been rebound in modern brown cloth. Moderate age spotting to endpapers, text and illustrations are mostly clean with some scattered age spotting. Pages 17-24 of volume 2 are creased at the bottom corner, the page corner was folded over and the book closed at some point.
