Leather spine is beautiful and bright with black labels and gold titles. Bookplate of previous owner on front pastedown attached only at the top of the bookplate, easily removable. Text has very occasional age spotting. Major Henry Shakespear was a British officer serving in India. This second, much enlarged, edition is meant as an extremely detailed and practical guide for a British gentleman wishing to hunt in India. It covers everything you need to know to have a wonderful sporting adventure in British India in 1862 from firearms to ammunition to supplies to the what to expect from the terrain, climate, and animals themselves. Shakespear describes his hunts after tiger, wild hog (pig-sticking) , panther, bear, elephant, buffalo, bison (Gaur - largest wild bovine in India) , and others. Shakespear wrote the book just after the Indian Rebellion (called the Mutiny in his day) and he included information on Indian horses and irregular cavalry seemingly in an effort to improve British fighting capability. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 365 pages.
