Hardcover, 1931. First Edition. Very Good. Privately printed for the author by California Graphic Press. Signed by the author. Octavo, pp. 219. Frontispiece portrait of Colonel W. S. Van Dyke, 27 more full page photographs. Bound in publisher's dark blue cloth with a gold buffalo head on the front cover with gold front cover and spine titles. Boards slightly bowed, corners rubbed, bottom corner of reard board bent. Spine titles faded, spine bumped at both ends. Signed and inscribed by the author in blue ink. Inscription reads "To Miss Connelly - I don't care if I did promise to marry you. I insist! W. S. Van Dyke '33." W. S. Van Dyke (1889-1943) was a Hollywood film director who had several successful films including Tarzan the Ape Man. He was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. He directed the 1931 film Trader Horn, the first non-documentary film shot on location in Africa. This book is about the filming of Trader Horn near Lake Victoria and the hunting safari Van Dyke enjoyed while in the area. The filming was ardous with Van Dyke and both leads (Harry Carey and Edwina Booth) coming down with malaria. Edwina Booth became so ill that her film career was destroyed and the studio eventually reached a financial settlement with her. Van Dyke describes hunting with professional hunter W. V. D.
