The Bob Bowen Collection of 9 Western Americana Books

Hardcover. First Edition. Near Fine. Bob Bowen was a native Texan and resident of Amarillo from 1945 until his death in 2013. He was a WWII combat pilot, newpaper reporter, editor, and publisher. He became Director of Public Relations, Advertising, and Other Company Communications for Shamrock Oil and Gas. During Bowen's tenure at Shamrock, the company provided funding for Western Americana and Texana books and pamphlets written by J. Evetts Haley and printed by legendary Texas printer Carl Hertzog. Bowen was a Western Americana enthusiasist and collector for most of his life and he knew Haley, Hertzog, Bugbee, and many other Western writers and artists. This is a collection of 9 signed books that belonged to Bowen. All are signed by the author or printer and several have warm personalized inscriptions to Bowen. All are first printings, many of them limited editions. The books are: Much Oliged by George Autry with an inscription from Autry's daughter to Bowen as Autry had passed away by the time the book was printed. The inscription mentions that Bowen was the only one who could find the original for one of the Bugbee illustrations used in the book. Trails Travelled Tales Told by Hervey Chesley inscribed by Haley who wrote the introduction. Earl Vandale on the Trail of Texas Books by Haley inscribed by Haley. Vandale was the preeminent collector of Texana and is mentioned in Six Score. Then Came Christmas for Mildred Taitt by Haley inscribed by Haley. Charles Schreiner General Merchandise by Haley inscribed by Haley. The Journey of Fray Marcos De Niza by Cleve Hallenbeck inscribed by Carl Hertzog who printed and designed the book and won a major award for doing so. The Red River Valley: Then and Now by A. W. Neville inscribed by Hertzog who designed and printed it. Buckskin Frank Leslie: Gunman of Tombstone by Colin Rickards inscribed by Hertzog who designed and printed it. The El Paso Salt War of 1877 by C. L. Sonnichsen inscribed by Hertzog who designed and printed it. In his inscription Hertzog points out a mistake he made in the type and implies Bowen had seen pre-publication proofs. Hertzog underlined the mistake in the text as well.
