First edition with the Scribner's seal and the A. The story of a cowboy and his cowhorse, born on the same day, and their adventures. Author won the 1927 Newbery Medal and is in the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame and the Hall of Great Westerners. Author was born and learned to ranch in Western Canada, but came to America under an assumed name when accused of cattle theft. He was arrested and jailed for 15 months in Nevada for a separate charge of cattle rustling. An artist as well a writer, this book is profusely illustrated by James. No previous owner marks. Text and illustrations clean and bright. Spine slightly slanted. Boards slightly bowed. One spot and some tanning to endpaper with author's signature, not affecting signature. Dust jacket is unclipped. Moderate soiling to jacket, spine panel is age darkened. There is a 2x1 inch piece missing from top of DJ spine panel.
