Mission to Tashkent. F. M. Bailey.

Mission to Tashkent

Hardcover, London: The Folio Society, 1999. Near Fine. First Folio Society printing. Introduction and Epilogue by Peter Hopkirk (author of The Great Game). Lieutenant-Colonel F. M. Bailey was born in India and became an officer in the Indian Army. He was later transferred to the Political Department and joined the Great Game. He was proficient in Tibetan and joined Younghusband in his 1904 invasion of Tibet. In 1918, Bailey was sent to Tashkent in a mission to discover what the Bolsheviks were doing in Central Asia and what their plans were for India. Bailey eventually had to flee the city, pretending to be an Austrian, and joining the Cheka with the mission to hunt for a British agent (himself). I assume he failed to find the agent. No previous owner marks. Text and photographs clean and bright. Appears unread. Book has a faint smell of smoke. Comes in a Fine slipcase. Ships same or next business day. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 269 pages. [Item #71654]
