Dash & Dart

Illustrated by Mary & Conrad Buff Hardcover, New York: The Viking Press, 1942. First Edition. Very Good. INSCRIBED by the authors in blue ink on first free endpaper. Inscription reads "To Stanley III and Tommy Marsh from Conrad Buff and Mary Marsh Buff - who thought of boys like you when they did this book. November, 1942." Well, let's hope not. Born into a wealthy oil family, Stanley Marsh III grew up to become an artist, business man, philanthropist, and well known charming, eccentric citizen of Amarillo, Texas. He became internationally famous for funding the art installation Cadillac Ranch in that city. In his mid 70s, Marsh was named in a lawsuit alleging he sexually abused teenage boys. That suit was settled out of court and he was later indicted by a Texas grand jury for the alleged sexual assault of two other teenagers. He died before the trial could be held. The allegations prompted Texas Monthly to publish an article on Marsh entitled Darkness on the Plains. Caldecott Honor Book. Crayon marks on p. 7. Book now protected in plastic covering. Ships same or next business day. ; Sepia Brown Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 75 pages; Signed by Author & Illustrator. [Item #69670]
