Today’s book is a book I actually liked. Hard to rip on a book I like so I’ll just have to write this straight. It’s called “Every Man in this Village is a Liar” by Megan Stack. It’s non-fiction, sort of a combination of reporting and memoir. Megan Stack was a 25 year old reporter for the LA Times living in Houston and covering Texas for the paper when she went on vacation to Paris, France. She was in Paris on 9/11 and was immediately assigned to Afghanistan and the war on terror. In the years since 9/11 she’s been to Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the occupied territories. She is still a reporter for the LA Times and has been nominated for a Pulitzer for her reporting. The book is amazing. It is not straight reporting. Her goal is not to dryly describe events (she already did that for the LA Times), but to get the reader to feel the emotional truth of what it was like to be in the Middle East during the War on Terror. She sought out danger and reported from some incredibly violent areas. She interviewed everyone from high level politicians to drug fueled warlords to normal people on the street. The chapter on Egypt’s elections is fascinating. She actually saw the vote being rigged on election night. The military surrounded the polling station she was at, evicted the voters, brought in judges carrying blank ballots, and then filled them in so Mubarak’s candidate would win. The crowd attacked one of the judges on his way in to the polling station and the box of blank ballots he was carrying broke open, spilling the ballots onto the street. The US backed the election results. It’s hard to say if we were right or wrong. Mubarak or the Muslim Brotherhood. A stable monster with a long track record of torture and murder or unpredictable though fairly elected Islamists with a history of assassinations and terrorism. What a choice.
