This Friday, September 16th, Channel 13 will be filming at Good Books In The Woods. They will be filming stand-up comedian Edith Rattner during her free comedy show at 11:00am. Edith is 84 and began her stand-up career at Good Books In The Woods back in 2009. This will be her third comedy show at Good Books. Edith has invited her friends and family, but we can still accommodate a few more people. Channel 13 will film her act and then an interview with Edith. If you’d like to attend please arrive a few minutes early – say 10:45am.

The show is free, Edith has new material, and you’ll get to see a local news camera team in action. Let’s hope no one does anything too stupid. I guess Channel 13 can always edit out the baying of my beagles. Hope to see you here Friday at 10:45am.

Edith was recently featured in the local newspapers. I think the story came out last Thursday. If you missed it, here’s a link:

Tomorrow is the Writers In Performance Walt Whitman Birthday Celebration. It starts at 3pm with poet C.K. Williams appearing at Montgomery College’s Library. C.K. is a leading authority on the life of Walt Whitman and he’s also a fine poet in his own right. Williams has won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He teaches creative writing at Princeton University and is the Chancellor of the American Academy of Poets. You can’t get a more impressive resume. I’ll be there selling his books, both his book on Whitman and his own books of poetry.

Tomorrow night at the Corner Pub in Conroe at 7pm is the Annual Gathering of Poets. CK Williams and 20 published poets (including our own Dave Parsons) will be reading their favorite Whitman poems as well as their own poetry. It’s one of Writers In Performances’ most popular events. Come on out and have a drink with us and listen to some great poetry.

Recently we bought 600 hardback books from a book collector in Houston who is downsizing. She took great care of the books and almost all of them are protected in archival plastic jackets. They are all First Editions. Although we did find some nice gems in her collection that we’ll be taking to major book shows, the majority of the books are somewhat common. We are selling them for $5 each including tax. Her collection includes Mysteries and Literature published from about 1968 - 2000. Most have never been read. I think this is a great deal. For $5, tax included, you get a book that’s never been read, is in great condition, is a First Printing, and is already in a protective jacket.

It’s an opportunity to try a new author or genre. Pick something you’ve never thought of reading before. At $5, tax included, it’s not much of a risk.

We are also having a $5 hardback sale in our Mystery room. Any hardback in the Mystery Maze is $5 tax included. I haven’t actually gone through the books in the Maze yet so you might find something valuable. At one point we had early Crighton Firsts in that room. Happy Hunting!

Romance Hardbacks and Trade Paperbacks are now $2 + tax. A few of those books are Firsts that my Dad priced at $30. Those are probably really worth $30, but I’m too lazy to list Romance hardbacks on the internet and I’m not taking them to book shows. Most of the books are common reading copies. One interesting point about romance books is that most romance authors never get published in hardback. It’s simply too expensive for the publisher. The only romance that gets released in hardback is by the really well known, popular and presumably talented writers. If you’re a romance fan and want to try a new author, grabbing a $2 hardback is a great way to do it.

Good Books In The Woods will be at the Houston Indie Book Fair this Saturday. The Book Fair is held outside under the overhang of the Menil Museum in Houston. If it’s a nice day, it will be a lot of fun. I went last year and it was a great fair. There will be lots of exhibitors. Authors, small presses, publishers, indie books stores, literary journals – there will be about 100 of us. This is not a collector’s fair – it’s a fun fair. They also have live music and readings throughout the day. It starts at 11am and goes until 5pm. It’s a nice break from The Woodlands. Everyone’s friendly and happy, but it’s a different crowd than The Woodlands. Last year I saw more tattoos and piercings in one hour at the Book Fair than I’ve seen in The Woodlands in 2 1/2 years. If you’re looking for something different this weekend, it’s a good time. Thousands of people showed up last year. Stay home if the weather’s bad though. The museum roof’s overhang might protect me if it rains, but you will get wet.

Last Thursday afternoon and evening was the annual celebration of Emily Dickenson’s birthday hosted by Writers in Performance and the Montgomery County Literary Council. At 3:00pm at Montgomery College there was a panel discussion of Emily Dickinson and her relationship with Thomas Higginson. The discussion was educational, informing, and even a bit amusing. Higginson was an intense abolitionist and radical who believed violence was an acceptable means of political change. By the time he corresponded with Emily, Higginson had calmed down a bit, but was still fairly radical.

After the panel, we all went up to the Corner Pub in Conroe. There were about 20 invited poets who each took the mic in turn to recite their favorite Emily Dickenson poem. Each then read a poem of their own. After the invited poets, there was an open mic night when anyone who wanted to, could read a poem. Most of the original poetry was good, some even excellent. The drinks were good and relatively inexpensive, the deli food was decent. All in all a good, fun, enjoyable night. Writers in Performance and the Montgomery County Literary Council host a similar event for Walt Whitman’s birthday. Hopefully, I’ll send out a reminder when it gets close.

Casey Fleming will be back by popular demand to teach another Memoir Workshop. The workshop will meet every Tuesday from 6:30pm – 9:00pm here at Good Books In The Woods for 8 weeks. Casey has her MFA from the University of Houston and is an experienced writer and teacher of writing. She has taught at Inprint and other places (I seem to have lost her CV). This is an Inprint style workshop. Class size is limited to an absolute maximum of 10 students. Please be 21 years old or older. Every member of the class will turn in a portion of their Memoir. The student turns in their work one week before the class in which it will be discussed. Every other student, and Casey, reads the work before class and prepares a written critique. During class each student and Casey provide oral feedback and the student is given copies of the written critiques. The atmosphere is friendly and laid back, but the goal (making the students better writers) is serious.

The cost for the workshop is $200. Pay Good Books In The Woods. Cash, check, or charge.
